What Comes in a Cornhole Set?

Picking out a cornhole set should be pretty simple. You’ll need to make some decisions, like choosing your design, but overall it’s a straightforward process.

Most companies that make custom cornhole sets already know regulation sizes and measurements. We can’t pick out the design that fits you, but we can inform you of the tools you can use, what it is that you really need, and what comes with a purchase.

It’s always a good idea to be prepared and understand just what you will get for your money. When you order a cornhole set, you get everything you need to play. But what does that mean? Check out this full guide below.

Items Required to Play

A set should come with the basic requirements to play a game of cornhole. You don’t need a lot to play. While you can always add special accessories, you can also play a great game with just the basics.

Those basics include your actual cornhole boards. A set will come with two boards and eight cornhole bags, which is four for each side during gameplay.

Once you have those things, you can set up just about anywhere and simply enjoy the game. Of course, it’s helpful to also be able to keep track of the score, but no official scorecard piece or tool is required. You can always just grab scratch paper and a pen or even use the Notes app on your phone if it’s easier.

Cornhole Bags

You can’t play a game without cornhole bags. When you purchase a cornhole set, it should come with eight bags. This allows you to divide the bags into two sets of four to accommodate gameplay.

The company you order your set from might have a default or standard color or they may let you choose a color. In most cases, there are a variety of colors available.

Cornhole bags also come in two different styles. You have your traditional corn-filled bags, or there are resin bags. The resin bags typically have some sort of plastic filling inside of them. Whether you choose corn or plastic filling, the bags will be the same weight when you receive them. There are regulations around how much a bag should weigh.

Each type of bag has its own pros and cons where quality is concerned. Many seasoned players prefer the traditional corn bag, but others prefer the plastic beading.

You will see cornhole bags in a variety of colors, but you also could potentially purchase customized cornhole bags if you prefer. Within a cornhole set, you should at least get a basic set of 8 bags.

Cornhole Boards

Cornhole boards are the other basic element we mentioned you need to play a game. Regulation cornhole boards come to you made of wood and will have a specific length, width, and angle when created. A regulation board measures 48 inches long and 14 inches wide. Ideally, they will be made with real wood as well.

The angle at which the board sits also has regulations for standard boards to make them consistent.

Boards can be purchased in other sizes. For instance, a tailgating cornhole set will be slightly smaller and designed for portability.

Your cornhole boards can be plain wood or you can have them painted or imprinted with a custom design. Again, most companies that make these boards have a variety of design choices or the ability to customize your own boards if you prefer.

High-quality wood and materials always make a difference in the quality of your boards.

Don’t Forget to Accessorize

We mentioned earlier that there are a variety of different accessories and additions that you can purchase to go with your cornhole set. They can add a little bit of flair and something extra to your game.

  • Scoring Items: You can purchase scoring items so you always have a scorecard with any game. Try a scorecard you can attach to the boards, and then mark with a magnetic piece or even dry erase marker during a game. There are many different scoring accessories out there.
  • Carrying Case: A carrying case can be convenient for transporting your cornhole set anywhere you want to go. However, it can also be a great addition for storing your set and keeping it from getting dirty when not in use. Ideally, a sturdy case that zips and has carrying handles works great.
  • Lights: You can add LED light strips to your board to make it a bit more fun. Lights can be placed around the holes or simply around the frame of the board. These are a lot of fun for gatherings or playing at nighttime.
